The holiday season is a time filled with gatherings spent with friends and family, but it can also be difficult to fully enjoy the present moment. Leading up to the holidays, we may feel stressed and overwhelmed getting everything prepared. From attending holiday parties, going last minute holiday shopping, and trying to meet loved ones expectations, it’s likely to become burnt out and exhausted. Today, let’s discuss how we can stay present and mindful to make the most out of the holiday season:

Release the Idea of Perfection

After planning and preparing for the last month, it’s easy to set expectations on how you think the holidays should go. It’s important to remember that nothing is ever perfect – release any ideas of perfection to avoid feeling disappointment and creating a negative atmosphere. Rather than dwelling on any mishaps, embrace and make light out of them. A new and fresh perspective has the ability to turn a sour situation into something positive. Imperfection creates the best memories.

Practice Gratitude

The holiday rush is real, however, don’t forget the true meaning of the holiday season: appreciation and gratitude. Carve out a minute every day to reflect on what you are grateful for – whether it’s first thing in the morning or when you’re getting ready for bed. Gratitude is not a time-consuming process. Simply think about it, write it down, or share it with a loved one. When we’re having a stressful day, taking a moment to pause and reflect truly has the ability to shift our mood. Gratitude is a ripple effect; inspire others with your actions and spread joy this holiday season.

Know Your Limits

With all of the activities this time of year brings, it’s easy to become a yes man and want to commit to every outing. Rather than saying “yes” to every invite, prioritize what events are the most important to you. If we’re at an event we really don’t want to be at, then we are not fully giving our energy and staying present. Our plates are already full as busy men – let’s reduce the amount of stress we bring in and recognize when we don’t have the ability to give ourselves to others.

Engage with Others

Maybe you have family or friends that live far away and you haven’t caught up with them since last December – take the time to fully engage and connect with them. Put away your phone and other distractions. Your phone will still be there in an hour, but you only have a limited amount of time to spend with loved ones before they go back home. Make eye contact and actively listen to what the other person has to say.

The holiday season is short lived; make the most out of it. Don’t allow yourself to get caught up in the chaos and let the little joys slip through your fingers. The more present and mindful you are, the more you will enjoy the holiday experience. Wishing you a happy holiday season, kings!
