Beat the Heat: Beard Care Tips for Summer

Now that the temperature is rising, it’s time to reevaluate your beard regimen and adjust what’s no longer working. What suited your beard during the cold and dry winter won’t be beneficial under the blazing summer sun mixed with sweat and humidity. We want to enjoy all of the outdoor activities summer has to offer while still feeling confident and comfortable in our skin. A well-groomed beard polishes off your look and enhances your features, so let’s discuss how we can keep our beard up to par all season long.
Beard Oil
Just because the weather is warmer doesn’t mean that we should neglect hydrating our beard – we simply need to switch out the heavy oil for a more lightweight option to accommodate the summer heat. Heavier oils have the tendency to weigh down our beard and clog our pores, the opposite of what we’re trying to accomplish. Since we’re likely to sweat more this time of year, a lightweight and fast absorbing beard oil will do the trick. Pro tip: opt for a beard oil with a subtle, fresh scent to avoid strong and overpowering smells in the heat.
Wash Your Beard
Our beards need a little extra TLC in the summer months from the sweat and sunscreen. Be sure to use a wash specifically formulated for beards to keep your beard clean from the grime. Beard wash is key as regular shampoo will dry out your beard and skin, leading to discomfort and irritation. Although it’s important to maintain a clean beard, it’s just as important to not over wash and strip your natural oils – it’s a fine line to walk. Wash your beard 2-3 times a week and rinse with water on off-days for the right balance.
Trim It Up
Maybe you grew your beard out during the winter, and now it’s starting to feel slightly out of control and unmanageable. Give your beard some breathing room with a trim to help you stay cool and comfortable in the summer heat. If you’re unsure on how to trim your beard on your own, your barber can help guide you in the right direction and shape your beard to fit your face. You’ll see (and feel) what a difference a cleaned-up beard can make, giving you the ultimate confidence boost for summer festivities.
Protect Your Beard
Earlier this month, we talked about the importance of sunscreen for our skin. Even our beards are susceptible to sun damage, so be sure you’re taking the proper precautions and applying an SPF of at least 30 everyday, especially when you’re outside for prolonged periods of time. Not only do you want to protect yourself from skin cancer, but you want to maintain the health of your beard – the sun’s harmful UV rays can weaken your hair, cause your color to fade, and weaken your hair.
The summer heat doesn’t mean you have to shave off your beard completely, it just means to upgrade your routine accordingly. Even when the temperature hits 100 degrees, you can still keep your beard looking sharp and feeling fresh. A little extra care and effort goes a long way, your grooming routine doesn’t have to be complicated to achieve results.
