Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Fitness Journey
Hello again, Kings! Just because the summer is coming to a close doesn’t mean that our fitness routine is too. I’m sure most of us want to look our best while at the beach or the pool. However, health and fitness is not just a summer thing – it’s a lifestyle. It can feel daunting to start a routine, so we’ve compiled a list of tips to help you feel your best all year long:
Set Realistic Goals
Think about why you want to start your fitness journey. Is it to lose weight? Is it to build muscle? A combination of things? Whatever your reason is, make sure it is attainable and realistic. You’re not going to lose twenty pounds in a week – and you’ll be disappointed and discouraged when you don’t achieve it.
Create a Plan and Stay Consistent
Create a plan that works for you, your lifestyle, and your health and fitness goals. Schedule workouts into your daily routine that you enjoy. If you hate running, then you’ll find every excuse to skip out on your workout. We know that you kings are incredibly busy; maybe you don’t have a lot of time in your day for a long workout, so squeeze in what you can when you can. Maybe it’s a walk on your lunch break or a quick at-home workout after the kids go to bed. Life hack: if you work from home, get a walking pad and keep it at your desk (it’s an easy way to get your steps in while checking things off your to-do list).
Buddy System
Find a friend who is already on their fitness journey or invite someone to join you. Feeling support from a friend makes all the difference when you’re lacking discipline or feeling unmotivated. Haven’t you ever heard misery loves company? Working out with a partner holds you accountable and keeps the energy fun, even if you’re not feeling it that day. Joining a group class is a great way to be surrounded by a community and meet new people who have similar goals to you.
Don’t Overdo It
Doing too much too soon is how you’ll quickly burn out and lose motivation. Start slowly – you don’t have to hit the gym every day in your first week. Try incorporating a workout three times a week to start and gradually increase as your body gets used to the routine. To avoid injury, choose workouts that are manageable for your current fitness level. Over time, you’ll be able to challenge yourself and choose a more demanding workout by increasing reps or weight. Prioritize rest and recovery; this may seem counterproductive, but you won’t see any changes if you’re pushing your body too hard. Listen to your body.
Balanced Nutrition
Having a balanced diet will help you feel good and perform better in your workouts. Eating a high protein diet will help you stay full longer and build muscle. It’s tough to eat nutritiously with a busy life; meal prep at the beginning of the week or already have your meals planned out. Remember, healthy eating doesn’t have to be time consuming or complicated. Search online for quick and easy recipes that take 30 minutes or less. Don’t forget to stay hydrated, folks.
Keep Learning and Growing
Seek out help and guidance from professionals; a personal trainer can provide assistance and encouragement throughout your journey. In addition, a personal trainer can tailor a workout routine to meet your goals and where you’re at right now. You can also educate yourself by watching videos and reading regarding health and fitness (good news, you’re already at this step by reading this blog).
Track Your Progress (and Celebrate Yourself!)
Start a fitness journal to keep track of your progress. In a few months, you’ll be able to look back and see what worked for you and what didn’t. You can wear a fitness watch or use an app to track your progress if journaling isn’t your thing. Celebrate every victory (big or small) and how far you’ve come. You deserve to be celebrated!
Remember, fitness is a journey. Treat your body like royalty. Stay strong, kings.
