We might have started the year off strong with a clean and clear space, but now that we’re almost two months into the year, clutter could be piling up in our home and office. When we’re balancing a heavy workload and juggling life’s demands, it can be difficult to keep our space organized. Although it can feel like a nuisance to stay on top of, organization is the key to improved productivity levels and less stress. If our space is disorganized, so is our mind. Today, let’s learn how to take control of our environment and stick to organizational habits to set us up for success:

Clear the Clutter

The first step to getting organized is to clear the clutter you already have. This sets the foundation for optimal organization. Remove whatever is unnecessary and not being used – those items are just taking up space that could be better used for what’s actually needed. If you’re cleaning up your desk, throw out outdated papers and supplies that aren’t essential to your work. This way, when you’re at your desk, you have an efficient space ready for work. Go through your closet and donate clothes you grew out of or don’t wear anymore to make room for the clothes you actually do wear. Pro tip: if you haven’t reached for it in the last year, it’s likely safe to get rid of it. Once the clutter is clear, ensure it stays clear by not buying things you don’t have room for.

Create a System

Now that your space is clear, the hard part is to keep it clear. The most effective way to do this is by creating an organizational system for your belongings to have a home and for you to find them easily. Labeling boxes, organizing your closet with a shoe rack, and storing your office supplies in drawer dividers are all small but effective ways to keep all of your items stored in a specific place. When you use something, put it back where you originally found it rather than just setting it on the counter or leaving it on the floor. Cleaning as you go is a whole lot easier than cleaning once junk has accumulated all over the place. Make your life easier by implementing this habit into your daily routine.

Digital Declutter

Although it’s important to keep our physical space organized, don’t neglect your digital space too. In this day and age, we utilize our digital devices everyday and disorganized devices can heavily impact our stress levels. If you utilize your laptop for work, it can quickly become out of control with files that you can’t even find when actually needed. Delete files no longer relevant and categorize the files that are into folders. Another pro tip is to utilize services like Google Drive to make this step extra easy. Unsubscribe from email newsletters and sort your emails into folders to keep you from scouring for important notifications. Delete apps and photos on your phone that are just holding up storage space. This process might feel time-consuming, but a clear mind is worth it in the end.

Know that organization isn’t a one-size-fits all. What works for someone else, might not work for you. As you make the effort to become organized, you’ll quickly discover what systems and habits keep you in alignment with your goals. If you’ve struggled with staying organized your whole life, you won’t become a brand new person overnight. Start small and build momentum from there. Being intentional with your habits creates consistency, kings.
