Spring Skincare for Men

Now that spring is officially in full swing, the weather is transitioning from bitter cold to warmer days. With the weather change brings change in our skin and what our skin needs in order to thrive. Similar to changing your wardrobe to fit the seasons, your skincare routine also needs to fit the seasons. Though the days are warmer, spring weather can be unpredictable with humid rain. Today, let’s discuss how the weather change impacts our skin and how we can shift our skincare routine to accommodate the spring weather.
Hydrate Your Skin
In the winter, you likely adopted a heavyweight moisturizer to combat the dryness of the season. Just because the temperature is climbing, doesn’t mean you should throw out your moisturizer altogether. Your skin still needs hydration – just a more lightweight moisturizer to accommodate the warmer air. In the humidity, your skin actually loses moisture at a quicker rate. Look for a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid to replenish moisture and with SPF to protect yourself from the sun. April showers can be deceiving; even on a cloudy and rainy day, UV rays can still penetrate through the clouds. So, be sure you’re applying your SPF rain or shine. Don’t forget that hydration starts from within – drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin (and body) hydrated from the inside out.
Go Gentle on Your Skin
A gentle cleanser is key to keeping your skin happy and clear without stripping away natural oil production. Choose a cleanser free of harsh chemicals and fragrance to avoid skin irritation and discomfort. Wash your face twice a day to remove all of the buildup that accumulates on your skin throughout the day and overnight – oil, sweat, and dirt all contribute to breakouts and dull skin. A clean canvas allows for the rest of your skincare routine to properly absorb and do what it’s designed to.
Scrub Smart
Your skin might have accumulated dead skin from the dry weather over the winter months, leading to dull and uneven skin. Remove dead skin cells with gentle exfoliation once or twice a week. For an even deeper yet still gentle exfoliation, see your esthetician about a microdermabrasion and discover just how much junk is buried underneath your skin. When exfoliation is a crucial part of your skincare routine, don’t overdo it to avoid damage and irritation.
Smooth Shave
Your shaving regimen is an extension of your skincare routine. Shaving is a regular part of many men’s routines, so let’s discuss how we can shave to protect our skin this spring. Rather than using a traditional shaving gel, opt for a shaving cream with hydrating ingredients that will replenish your skin barrier to prevent razor burn and irritation. Instead of shaving before you jump into the shower, wait until after for the warmth and steam to open up pores and soften facial hair – leading to an easier, smoother shave.
This spring, be sure to give your skin the proper attention and care to fit the changing weather. The new season presents the opportunity for a much needed refresh and adjust what’s no longer working in your skincare routine. With these tips, you’ll feel confident and ready for whatever you have planned this spring.
